Co-Teaching & Inclusion: Follow-Up

Phase III follow-ups take place a few months after co-teachers have completed Phase II training.  The purpose of the Phase III follow-up is to maintain fidelity to the model and assist teachers in identifying and overcoming obstacles to implementing the model. The interim time between Phase II and Phase III allows teachers to practice their new skills, encounter new problems and generate numerous relevant questions about implementing the co-teaching model.

Phase III training can take several forms. Here are some of the most popular formats:

Format A: Private observations and consultations with each team:
(3 teams per day, 2 hours per team) Rick will conduct a formal observation of each co-teaching team. Following the observation, he will conference with each team privately. During the conference he and the team will discuss present levels of performance. Teams will receive a detailed data-based report. Data from this observation will be compared with Phase II observation data. Issues and questions will be discussed during the observation. At the end of the day, all teams can meet with their administrator and Rick facilitates the discussion.

*Substitute coverage is required for teams when they conference with Rick in Format A. Coverage may also be required  at the end of the day when participants meet with their administrator.

Format B: Group observations and debriefings:
(3 co-teaching teams per day)
All co-teachers who were involved in Phase II training will observe each other as they teach. During the co-teaching sessions, Rick is one of the observers and collects data as he would during a formal observation. Following the observation, the co-teaching team conducts a debriefing of the lesson. All observers share their input. Each co-teaching team receives a report from rick which details their present levels of performance. At the end of the day, all teams can meet with their administrators to discuss Issues and pose questions. Rick facilitates the discussion.

*Full substitute coverage is required for all participants all day for Format B.

Format C: Group consultation day:
(Limit 10 participants)
All co-teachers who were involved in Phase II training will meet with Rick. The meeting has 4 objectives: The AM Session focuses on Objective 1 and 2, The PM session focuses on Objective 3 and 4

  1. Discuss administrative issues which may be constraining the implementation of the co-teaching model and generate strategies to overcome those obstacles. Areas of focus are generally scheduling, class composition, class size, planning time, and co-teaching assignments. Teams generally generate short and long term strategies to address these issues.
  2. Determine material and equipment needs which are needed to fully implement the co-teaching model and provide the level of instruction necessary to insure academic success for the students in the inclusion classrooms.
  3. Share instructional strategies to further student success in the co-teaching environment. Teachers present Rick with standard course of study that they will be teaching in the next few weeks and he creates/provides materials and ideas for creating multi-modality lessons which will lend themselves to the co-teaching model.
  4. Communicate outcomes with administrators.  A brief discussion of problems and potential solutions is conducted. Rick facilitates the discussion as participants interact with their administrator(s.)

*Full substitute coverage is required for all participants all day.
